The Commission was established to
“Generally promote, preserve and give guidance to the furtherance of the Samoan language, in particular the language as a living and ordinary means of communication, intrinsically related to the culture as a living heritage and wealth of knowledge and skills that is transmitted to nourish diversity and human creativity.”

Members of the Commission
Under A.S.C.A. § 16.1702 the Commission has eleven members: representatives of the American Samoa Community College, the Department of Education, the churches, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Office of Samoan Affairs, and three members of the public.
